Find a Happier You

Life's challenges can take a significant toll on both mind and body. The pace of modern living often drives our cortisol levels to the max, leading to stress, anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, and declining physical health. We are constantly switched on, and this state of overdrive contributes to many of today's illnesses. Acupuncture offers a gentle, natural way to restore balance and calm us. Activating the parasympathetic nervous system allows us to breathe again. This shift helps us feel more grounded, in control, and at peace.

ental Health in the Acupuncture Clinic

I see patients daily coming for mental health conditions. I believe it's the biggest problem facing modern society. The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests over 450 million people are suffering. Much of this, I believe, can be attributed to the way that we are in the modern world, where we are constantly glued to our phones, being dopamine addicts, continually multitasking, overworking, and so much more. But what are some of the main conditions in the clinic I treat?

In addition, things like neurodiversity are often treated in the clinic. This includes things like ADHD and so much more.

Why is Acupuncture Good for Mental Health Conditions?

Many people find their way to acupuncture when it comes to mental health because it is an entirely natural process, which works on the harmony within your body, rather than using drugs to numb the pain. It's treating the deep root, the underlying problem, to create a meaningful change rather than putting a plaster over the top of the wound.

This happens partly because the needles work on changing the body's chemistry, including releasing natural chemicals like dopamine. But it's also about the deep healing that an acupuncture session creates, which is partly through deep listening. You get so much time with me, which gives you the space and time to be heard without judgment, with someone who understands what you're going through, and someone who generally cares about your wellbeing.

But the other reason why people often choose acupuncture for mental health is because of the flexibility it provides. It doesn't actually require you to talk about anything; you don't have to go and revisit traumas regularly or explain things in detail. We can go deep or rely on the body's own signals and the principles of Chinese Medicine. With Josh, there is no expectation of speaking before you're ready. However, it's often likened to therapy, but patients comment on how deeply it treats. They're usually amazed that it clears things or creates a lasting change that years of therapy couldn't always do.

As soon as I spent a little while with Josh, I knew that I had chosen the right acupuncturist for me! Josh is a good listener and has the elusive emotional intelligence that sets him apart.

Why Josh for Mental Health Issues?

My interest in supporting patients with mental health is deeply personal. Over the years, I've lost numerous friends to mental health issues, which are losses that have felt painfully preventable. Too often, the proper intervention wasn't found in time, and they weren't given the space to heal, which drives my commitment to change things for others. There's no greater feeling than being able to help a patient see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel (even if it feels incredibly far away).

Additionally, I've struggled with mental health when having a chronic illness, so I understand how difficult things can be. Understanding that there is no separation between the emotional, physical and spiritual is essential as part of any treatment. In Chinese Medicine, you cannot separate them, which is often the strength of this beautiful medicine. Through my own experience, I've seen how important breaking the negative feedback loops is, which trap us in cycles of pain and prevent us from seeing a way forward. Often, it's about breaking this cycle so that our bodies have the space to separate themselves from the physical and the mental.

I've studied mental health deeply within the framework of Chinese Medicine, including spirit points and classical Chinese understandings, as well as undertaking counselling courses. Often, it's just about being able to listen deeply, guide, and give confidence.
