Acupuncture for Neck Pain
Neck pain is one of the more common musculoskeletal complaints that I see in the clinic. It's no wonder, as it affects millions, probably even billions, of people worldwide. There are so many potential reasons for neck pain, which could include poor posture, sustained stress, injuries, and so much more. It can have a vast and wide-ranging effect on daily life, leading to complaints like headaches, reduced mobility, and difficulty sleeping.
Our modern lifestyle plays a significant role in neck pain. The number of hours spent at computers, scrolling phones, driving, and carrying stress in our shoulders all contribute. In Chinese Medicine, this build-up of strain and tension is often seen as stagnation of Qi and blood, leading to pain and stiffness.

Why Neck Pain Happens
Neck pain can come from many causes, including:
Mechanical Problems
- Poor posture, especially at desks and computers
 - Muscle strains from overuse or awkward sleeping positions
 - Whiplash or trauma to the cervical spine
 - Cervical spondylosis (age-related changes in the neck joints)
 - Nerve impingement or herniated discs in the cervical spine

Inflammatory & Other Causes
- Arthritis affecting the neck joints
 - Fibromyalgia
 - Stress-related muscle tightness
 - Infections or, rarely, underlying medical conditions

Part of my role as your acupuncturist is to understand the cause and find my own Chinese Medicine answer so that I can tailor the treatment totally to you as an individual.

Great acupuncture with Josh. Back pain gone! After having an in-depth pre assessment, looking into my lifestyle, sleep etc I got to lie down. I was a first timer to the needles, and although I wasn’t nervous, Josh kept me relaxed throughout. He had a confident manner throughout and filled me with ease as he explained what the needles were doing. After a couple of sessions, my lower back pain has disappeared.

How Acupuncture Helps with Neck Pain
Acupuncture has been proven effective in relieving neck pain. This is partly because it works at treating both the physical and energetic roots of the problem. Benefits include:
- Stimulating the nervous system: Activates trigger points to release pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins.
 - Relaxing tight muscles: Releases tension and reduces spasms in the neck and shoulders.
 - Improving blood flow: Restores circulation to stiff and sore muscles.
 - Reducing inflammation: Calms irritated tissues and nerves.

Acupuncture works on meridians such as the Bladder, Gallbladder, and Governing Vessels to restore balance, ease stiffness, and encourage natural healing.

What to Expect During Treatment

We begin with a detailed consultation to understand your symptoms, posture, lifestyle, and triggers. Postural assessments and range-of-motion tests help us identify where tension is located.
Your treatment will involve fine, sterile, single-use needles placed at specific points in the neck, shoulders, and back. Sometimes we add techniques like cupping or gentle massage.
Most patients feel relaxed and improved mobility even after the first session. For chronic issues, multiple sessions may be needed to bring long-lasting relief.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is acupuncture painful for neck issues?
I totally understand the question. The thought of needles in the neck sounds a little scary, but most of the time, we wouldn't needle the neck. We can significantly impact other sides of the body, but sometimes, we will treat the neck locally, too. The needles shouldn't hurt, but you may feel the needle when it first goes in.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on how long you’ve had neck pain. Acute cases may improve in just a few sessions; chronic conditions often need a longer course. Sometimes, the longer the pain has persisted, the larger the number of channel involvements or muscles affected, so that it can take longer.
Is it safe?
Yes. Acupuncture is a safe, non-invasive treatment when performed by a qualified practitioner.
