Acupuncture Support for Women’s Health
Many women experience gynaecological complaints. These significantly impact their daily and monthly experiences, where the physical and mental challenges compound each other. The complaints cover everything from painful, irregular, or nonexistent periods to PMS, endometriosis, PCOS, and more.
Acupuncture is often used as a safe, holistic approach to ease these symptoms and restore the perfect order within your body to support long-term reproductive health.
Luckily, acupuncture has been used for centuries to support our health. More recently, fertility acupuncture has become increasingly popular because of the research that backs its success. Not only is it proven by research to have better outcomes, but we see it in the clinic every week in terms of successes and how much better patients feel in themselves.
Common Period Problems I Treat In Surrey
There are many things that we see in the clinic, which include:
- Painful, irregular, or absent periods
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
- Secondary Amenorrhea
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Endometriosis
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Sometimes, there isn't anything as dramatic as the above. Many patients come to acupuncture because they notice more significant changes around their cycle. These could include changes in their mood, bloating, fatigue, and many other symptoms that don't quite feel right.

How Acupuncture Helps Gynaecological Problems
- Acupuncture supports the endocrine system by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. This promotes a healthy balance of oestrogen and progesterone, helping to stabilise the menstrual cycle and calm the symptoms of hormonal flux.
- Reduces dysmenorrhea (painful periods) by reducing the overproduction of prostaglandins which cause uterine contractions. By improving pelvic blood flow and releasing muscular tension in the lower abdomen, acupuncture provides natural relief from chronic pelvic pain.
- From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, we focus on nourishing Blood and Qi. Clinically, this supports patients with amenorrhea (absent periods) or menorrhagia (heavy bleeding) by removing blood stasis and ensuring the body has the resources for a healthy and vibrant cycle.
- For complex conditions like Endometriosis and PCOS, acupuncture works to down-regulate systemic inflammation. It helps modulate the immune response and reduce the formation of pelvic adhesions and inflammatory cytokines.
In general, acupuncture supports mood and energy by calming the nervous system and encouraging greater hormone balance. This encourages improved general wellbeing across the cycle.

What Should You Expect?
Expect to feel benefits from the first session. Most patients feel a noticeable difference from the start, but seeing meaningful change can take a bit longer.
Every treatment is tailored to your unique presentation by understanding the cause of your complaint. Hence, it is not a standard protocol that we use. That's why every journey starts with an hour and a half consultation, during which you have plenty of time to share your experiences.
We cover your menstrual history, including your symptoms, and we look at your lifestyle and a holistic assessment of your general health. This covers stress, diet, sleep, energy, and much more.
After several sessions, many women notice improved cycle regularity, reduced pain, and greater balance.

What to Expect During Your Treatments
Deep consultations explore your fertility journey, including your menstrual history, lifestyle factors, and everyday life. It’s often in the small details, in how you perceive your fertility health, that can improve your success rates and ensure you are getting the best guidance.
Holistic assessments help us examine your overall wellbeing, stress levels, diet, and other health factors. This allows us to create tailored treatment plans, depending on whether you suffer from digestive issues or mental health issues, to ensure you are getting unique treatments based on your personal situation. We are making you the best version of yourself and optimising your fertility chances.
Every treatment is different. We often use a series of 4-10 needles to support your fertility and general health, with treatments differing from one session to the next. It's about utilising the full range of over 365 points to tailor each treatment depending on how you are feeling and where you are in your cycle.
Many patients notice better cycle regularity, reduced stress, and greater balance and wellbeing within the first few sessions. Promising results show this, and it isn't just the fantastic feedback we receive from patients.

FAQs Relating to Periods
Can acupuncture help if my period has stopped (amenorrhea)?
I often treat patients whose cycles have been paused for a while. This could be due to stress, too much exercise, or, sadly, most often, coming off hormonal birth control or other medications. It’s a tough time, as it is often linked to our womanhood, so it’s hard to juggle the physical and mental symptoms. Acupuncture can improve communication between the brain and the ovaries, whilst also helping nudge the body back into its natural rhythm. It can take a number of treatments, often up to three months, although sometimes longer, to ensure that the hormonal balance has been reset. Generally, the approach is very gentle, using minimal needles for maximum effect, and it’s all about improving the blood flow to the pelvic organs. It’s about helping the body feel supported so the cycle can return naturally.
Can acupuncture help with painful periods (dysmenorrhea)?
Painful periods are one of the most common reasons women seek acupuncture. It’s also one of the things I feel most sad about as a society; we are led to believe that they are normal. From an acupuncture perspective, they should never cause pain or discomfort, as that’s a sign that something is wrong. Hence, my role is to ensure everything moves smoothly and your body remains in perfect harmony. Modern research shows how acupuncture can work on reducing inflammation, improving blood flow, and balancing our hormones to ensure greater balance. Many of my patients find that after a few sessions, they can cut back or remove their reliance on painkillers completely. It’s not only about dulling the pain; it’s about addressing the underlying imbalance that causes the cramping in the first place.
How does acupuncture support symptoms of Endometriosis?
While acupuncture cannot cure endometriosis, it is a fantastic treatment for managing the symptoms. I work with many patients to help manage the chronic pelvic pain, bloating, and fatigue associated with the condition. By focusing on points that regulate the nervous system and support the body’s natural inflammatory response, we aim to make your cycles much more manageable. Often, patients notice that their flare-ups become less intense and less frequent over time.
Can acupuncture help regulate irregular cycles or PCOS?
Definitely. Acupuncture is very effective at supporting the communication between the brain and the ovaries (often called the HPO axis). Whether your cycles are non-existent, very long, or unpredictable, we work to encourage a more regular rhythm. For patients with PCOS, we focus on hormonal balance and insulin sensitivity. Like fertility work, I usually suggest tracking your progress for about 3 months, as this allows us to see how your body responds across 3 distinct hormonal cycles.
Can acupuncture help with PMS and hormonal mood swings?
Many of my patients feel like a different person in the week leading up to their period. Acupuncture is wonderful for the emotional side of gynaecological health, helping patients to deal with things like irritability, anxiety, and low mood. It is also effective for physical symptoms like breast tenderness or bloating. By helping the body shift out of fight-or-flight mode and into a calmer state, we can smooth out those hormonal peaks and troughs. It’s about helping you feel more like yourself all month, not just for two weeks.
I’m going through Perimenopause. Can acupuncture help with hot flushes?
Yes, this is a very common reason for treatment. Research has shown that acupuncture can be especially effective at lessening the frequency and severity of hot flushes and night sweats. Beyond the flushes, we also look at supporting your sleep and energy levels, which often take a hit during this transition. Every woman’s experience of menopause is unique, so I tailor the points to whether you’re struggling more with the physical heat or the brain fog and anxiety that can come with it.
How many sessions will I need for gynaecological issues?
The simple answer is that it really depends on your history and what we are treating. For chronic issues like endometriosis or long-term irregular cycles, I usually recommend weekly sessions for the first 4 to 6 weeks. This gives us a chance to see how your body shifts through a full cycle. Once your symptoms start to improve, which many people notice within the first few sessions, we can begin spacing the appointments to once a month for "maintenance" to keep everything in balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can acupuncture really help with fertility?
Yes, and increasingly, results are showing this. Whilst it isn't a guarantee of pregnancy, it's widely used to support fertility naturally and alongside medical treatments. Many patients really do see the benefits in terms of feeling better in themselves, improved hormonal health, and being better able to handle the stress of any fertility journey.
When should I start acupuncture if I’m doing IVF?
Ideally, acupuncture should begin several months before IVF to prepare the body, but even starting during stimulation or before embryo transfer can still be very beneficial.
Does acupuncture help with male fertility?
Yes. Acupuncture can support sperm health by improving blood flow, reducing oxidative stress, and balancing hormones. It takes a minimum of three months to change the quality and quantity of sperm, so it can take time, but it has a great chance of making a positive difference
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your personal circumstances. For natural fertility, weekly sessions are often recommended leading up to ovulation. For IVF, treatment is always tailored around the stages of your cycle and treatment plan.
