What Body Pain Conditions Acupuncture Helps With

Acupuncture is used for everything from acute flare-ups to chronic pain to supporting athletes performing at their greatest.  There are so many conditions that I treat in the clinic, which include things like:

Why Acupuncture For Body Pain?

Substantial evidence supports acupuncture's ability to treat a wide range of conditions. The NICE guidelines recommend it for chronic pain, including common issues like back and knee pain.

What makes acupuncture so effective is its unique approach to understanding the body. Instead of just treating a single muscle or symptom, it works on a deeper level, treating the underlying energetics of the body. It’s important to uncover why a problem has developed and then work on its root so that it doesn’t return in the future. For musculoskeletal problems, acupuncture can help to improve the blood flow to injured tissues, reduce heat and inflammation, and release tension. It is vital to calm overactive nerves, balance our bodies, and restore mobility. It’s an excellent treatment for acute sports injuries and long-standing aches that haven’t responded to other therapies.

These effects vary from person to person. Acupuncture often works best as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing.

Why Me For usculoskeletal Problems?

I’m a triathlete and endurance swimmer, so I know precisely what it is like to be sidelined by pain. I’ve done marathons, half Ironmans, ultramarathon swims, and more. This is why I am interested in the human body, our muscular system, and the biomechanics of movement. I understand the pain of a sharp injury, like acute back pain, but also what it means to deal with chronic discomfort and how this can affect long-term performance. Most importantly, I know how musculoskeletal pain can chip away at performance, but also mood and the quality of life. Few things are more frustrating than a shoulder that won’t let you swim or knees that protest every run.

That’s why I like to take the time to understand the whole picture. It's about understanding your entire health history, identifying any habits or patterns that may be causing the pain, and looking at long-term solutions. I use a mixture of Chinese and Western medicine, which includes acupuncture, remedial massage techniques, cupping, and moxibustion.

I’ve studied classical acupuncture, trained with integrative technicians who incorporate osteopathy and acupuncture, and completed a level 3 remedial massage therapy course, all in the hope of helping you achieve your health goals.

That's why I've worked with various athletes, including hockey players, professional footballers, triathletes, and more.

Acupuncture is a supportive therapy and experiences vary. Some people feel changes quickly; for others, the process unfolds over a series of sessions. Josh will discuss a personalised plan with you based on your goals and how your body responds. But here are some testimonials from patients:

Yesterday, I found myself remembering the old story of the blind men and the elephant. Each man reaches out and touches a different part of the animal. One feels the trunk and says it’s a snake. One feels the leg and says it’s a tree. Another feels the ear and says it’s a fan. Each thinks they are right.
